It’s the dream of every comics fan to see their favorite superheroes on screen in action. However there have been numerous superhero theme movies in bollywood like Ra.One, Krissh, and recently released A Flying Jatt, there not have been any movie based on the Indian comics superheroes. The recent news of Doga movie being shelved have also disheartened the fans.
While this has made the wait longer for the fans to see their favorite superheroes on silver screen, meet the PK Brothers (Pranjal Khadatkar and Pranay Khadatkar), who are using their animation skills and power of social media to bring alive the Indian Superheroes. Their short fan made 3D animated series “Roar of India Superheroes” have videos of Doga, Nagraj, Tiranga, Parmanu and Super Commando Dhruva. In a short span of time they have garnered more than 75,000 views on youtube.
On asking what inspired them to pursue a career in 3D animation Pranjal answers, “In our childhood, we enjoyed watching movies based on DC & Marvel comics. Later we realised, there are hardly any movies on Indian super heroes – apart from a few exceptions like Chacha Chowdhary & Motu-Patlu[now days]. After my education, I had to work at several places for my earnings. I worked as a showroom supervisor, worked as a computer operator in a college, also started my own cyber cafe business. But, being an artist by heart, I was not comfortable working and could not give my 100% at work. Later, I started learning 2D animation on my own by managing the cyber cafe business. Gradually, I learnt 3D animation, without joining any institute or any professional training. After working on more assignments and upgrading the skills, I started getting assignments for local advertisements in Raipur.
One day, while having a discussion with my younger brother Pranay, who stays in Pune, we realised that our dream of Indian superheroes can come true through his art of script writing and my skills in animation.”
Describing the many aspects of their 3D-animation works Pranjal adds, “We don’t follow any particular process or deadline, whenever we have free time we start working on our concepts, so Pranay mainly works on scripts, storyboarding, concept art and direction and I do work on CG animation and FX part. As of now we are working on Introductory videos of Indian Superheros, and after this if we get proper permission and some help with funds, we can also plan for superhero web series.”
When asked about their future plans Pranay excitedly answers “Definitely film making, currently I am working at a VFX company Anibrain Digital Technologies as a trainer, in free time I do short film making with my friends and colleagues. We have two youtube channels where we upload all our short films namely COSMIC TV [ bit.ly/cosmictv ] & COSMIC FILMS [ bit.ly/tyfilm]. And now ahead we are planning to make web series on India super heroes, for which we are trying to contact publisher, until now we have not succeeded, but someday we will surely achieve something great.”
Finally talking about the future of the animation industry in India and in entertainment generally Pranay believes future is very good only for those who work hard in this industry, as getting breakthrough in this industry is very hard and even after getting the job there are very less monetary benefits for the artist’s. Just because we have passion for this field we are struggling hard.
Animation is a time consuming job and definitely requires a lot of hard work with creativity. Show some love and support to their hard works by subscribing their Youtube Channel and Facebook Page. While future is bright in animation and VFX industry, meanwhile enjoy the teaser video of their upcoming Super Commando Dhruva short. Cheers!
